Yoga helps build strength, muscle tone, and endurance. Slow movements and deep breathing increases blood flow throughout the body, allowing every organ to function properly. Yoga also increases flexibility and mobility in the joints. With consistent practice, one can experience improved energy and vitality.
Yoga helps lower the fight or flight, and freeze response by activating our parasympathetic nervous system, the rest and digest system. Deep breathing during Yoga postures helps decrease levels of cortisol, a stress hormone in the body.
Regular Yoga practice creates mental clarity and calmness and increases emotional awareness. Yoga increases feel good chemicals like endorphins in the body that help decrease anxiety.
Stress is one of the leading causes of illness. It reduces our immune system’s ability to fight off antigens, making us more susceptible to infections. Yoga helps reduce stress by bringing harmony between the body and the mind. Yoga postures strengthen the body and breathing exercises relax the mind.
Deep breathing in Yoga postures helps the body naturally release the sleep hormone, melatonin and prepares the body to rest. Digestive disorders such as ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and constipation can be worsened by stress. Yoga helps reduce stress by calming the nervous system, and therefore, can help with better digestion.
Yoga helps one get in touch with the highest aspect of his or her being. The postures in Yoga can be physically challenging, however, as one gets stronger on the outside, one will also feel stronger on the inside. Consistent practice of Yoga will lead to improved self-confidence and empowerment.
